Community input on 2014 budget
The Town of Milton is inviting members of the community to provide input into the programs, service levels and priorities for the 2014 Operating and Capital budgets.
The annual budget assigns financial resources to various municipal services, programs and infrastructure projects within the community and establishes the associated tax levy that is required to meet these needs. The budget is developed by staff within the guidelines approved by Council in July and takes into account input received from the public in person, by written submission and through an online survey. Council will deliberate and approve the 2014 budgets in December 2013.
A brief public input survey will be available on the Town’s website from Tuesday, May 28 to Friday, June 28, 2013. Residents and business owners are encouraged to complete the online survey to express their opinions of Milton’s municipal services. The results of the survey will provide information to staff for consideration in preparing the 2014 budgets, including satisfaction with levels of service, recommendations for new services or elimination of existing services, and level of support for property tax increases.
A presentation will be made at the beginning of the Council meeting on Monday, May 27 at 7 p.m. to introduce the 2014 budget process. The meeting takes place in Council Chambers, Milton Town Hall (West) at 150 Mary Street, Milton. Those wishing to provide input in person are required to register as a delegation by filling out a Delegate Request Form, available at the Town Clerk’s office (Town Hall West, 150 Mary Street, Milton, L9T 6Z5) or on the Town’s website. Completed forms must be submitted to the Town Clerk’s office or faxed to 905-876-5022 by 10 a.m. on May 27.

MADD Canada and MJM Productions thanks Hawthorne Village residents
Recently a short movie was filmed in the Hawthorne Village neighbourhood for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) that will in the future be shown across canada in our schools to educate students about the dangers of impaired driving.
Laurie McCurlie has asked if I could post their thank you letter below to the community on behalf of both MADD Canada and MJM Productions.
MADD Canada and MJM Productions would like to express our gratitude to all residents of Hawthorne Village for your patience and support during the filming of our movie on Louis St. Laurent Ave on October 25 & 26th. We appreciate your tolerance of the road closures and other disruptions as we filmed in your neighbourhood throughout both nights.
The scenes shot in your community included a car crash and it ‘s aftermath. Halton Police, EMS and the Milton Fire Dept all lent their support to this worthwhile project, and many Officers, EMS and Firefighters came out to act as themselves in the emergency response scenes. This as yet untitled film will be shown across Canada during the 2013-2014 school year to teach over a million Canadian students about the dangers of impaired driving.
We appreciate the support of all residents in the Hawthorne Village neighbourhood, especially those who live close to the road, and to the Emergency Responders who went above and beyond the call of duty to help us produce this life saving film.

Union Gas Trail status update behind Cousens Terrace
At tonight’s Community Services Standing Committee meeting there will be a project update on the Union Gas Trail development from Thompson South to Philbrook Drive. This is a trail that is several years late in coming and has been held up due to multiple third parties in relation to grading, financial and timing issues. One thing I learned very quickly is when you have third party dependencies any control over timelines becomes sadly an illusion.

During tonight’s issue I’ll be asking about how the Town of Milton will assist the residents on Cousens Terrace who continue to be negatively impacted by the delayed ongoing work. Residents have reported that their backyards are suffering from erosion and damage to both their fences and backyard area due to the ongoing grading problems related to the trail work. This is in addition to the obvious reality that the trail has still not been built, that there is still no signed lease agreement on the lands in question and there is still no definite timeline on when this will occur.
It’s a poor reflection on all parties involved that in the past 4 years we can build high schools, new roads, communities, fire stations, etc but not a properly graded trail that residents were told would be completed years earlier.
Comment on 2013 Milton Town Budget
On Monday, May 28 Milton residents are invited to attend the 7 pm Town Council meeting to provide input into the programs, service levels and priorities for the 2013 Budget.
There will be an initial presentation to introduce the 2013 Budget process followed by an opportunity for local residents to speak before Town Council as delegates.
To provide input you can register as a delegate online anytime prior to 10 am on May 28th. You may also submit comments by completing an online survey that will go online at www.milton.ca from May 29 to June 29, 2012.
I’ve include a graphic to demonstrate what $1 of municipal property taxes bought in the 2012 operating budget.

McHappy Day at McDonalds to support Milton District Hospital Foundation
Today marks the 19th Annual McHappy Day, an annual fundraising initiative where a percentage of the sales of McDonald’s items goes to benefit charities across the country. Milton District Hospital Foundation once again will be the recipient of the funds raised at the local Milton McDonald’s locations.
$1.00 from: Big Macs, Happy Meals and All HOT McCafé Beverages (Mocha, Latte, Cappuccino, Americano, Espresso and Deluxe Hot Chocolate) including Brewed Coffee and Tea will be donated to Milton District Hospital Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
I’ll be volunteering there to work alongside McDonald’s staff today from 6 to 8pm. I volunteered last year and had a great time. I’ll be at the Milton 590 Martin street location (just north of steeles ave on the west side of the street, the one with the large indoor playground)

Bell Cell Tower proposed at Clark & Thompson
There is a proposal on behalf of Bell Canada (by Altus Group) to have a new cell tower put up by the New Life Church property at Thompson and Clark.
The proposal for the height of the tower is 29.9m (slightly under the 30m limit that would have required a more public process with an ad in the local media)
The final decision on the proposal rests with Industry Canada. It’s a federal matter and local Milton Town Council is not the approving body. But both residents and the Town can provide comments on the proposal.

The 2012 Town of Milton Budget meeting is set for Monday, December 12th at 7pm at Town Hall (Council Chambers). The Budget Documents are now online for review

Milton Infrastructure Renewal
There’s a report being represented to Milton Town Council on Monday with the innocent title of “Capital Asset Management“. It’s an issue that municpalties sometimes ignore or set aside at the peril of their future health. Much of Milton’s infrastructure has been built up in recent years through development charges. Roads, parks, storm sewers all funded using a good portion of monies collected from developers. Our growth has been highly concentrated in the past few years. It hasn’t been gradual but rather an explosion that came after the “Big Pipe” brought both water and wastewater services to Milton. In a 3 year time period from 2007 to 2010 alone we saw some $200 million in the form of roads, buildings and wastewater infrastructure be added to the Town’s asset list. But infrastructure doesn’t last forever. What was built around the same time will also need to be renewed around the same time. Read more
